Configuration of a heavy trailer is based on one of five heavy trailer types and their axle grouping(s) (single, tandem, tri-axle and quad-axle).
Trailer configurations for heavy trailers will begin as follows:
- Pig trailers - TP
- Dog trailers - TD
- Semi trailers - TS
- Lead trailers - TL
- Dolly trailers - TY
and will end with a number, or series of numbers representing the axle grouping(s) of your trailer.

Heavy trailers and heavy vehicles three years or older, registered for the first time in South Australia, will require an identity and a roadworthy inspection before registration.
