Registering a heavy vehicle

Heavy vehicle trailers

Configuration of a heavy trailer is based on one of five heavy trailer types and their axle grouping(s) (single, tandem, tri-axle and quad-axle).

Trailer configurations for heavy trailers will begin as follows:

  • Pig trailers - TP
  • Dog trailers - TD
  • Semi trailers - TS
  • Lead trailers - TL
  • Dolly trailers - TY

and will end with a number, or series of numbers representing the axle grouping(s) of your trailer.

To provide additional details about your trailer, you may need to complete and submit the Vehicle Supplementary Details form (780.6 KB PDF) .

If the trailer was previously registered in another state, is more than seven years old, and has an unladen mass of 4.5 tonnes or more, it will require a roadworthy inspection prior to registration.
