A person must be licensed to mine for opals in South Australia.
South Australia has four proclaimed opal fields - Coober Pedy, Mintabie, Stuart Creek and Andamooka.
Who should apply
Any person or business intending to mine for opals must first obtain a precious stones prospecting permit.
Before you begin
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age and be an Australian resident or hold a current working visa.
Individuals need some form of identification for signature - eg a driver's licence or current passport.
Visitors from overseas must have an unlimited working visa.
How to apply
Apply in person at any office of the Mining Registrar:
- Adelaide
- Andamooka
- Coober Pedy
- Marla and Mintabie.
You will need to pay an application fee and a fee for identification plates.
Renewals
Permits are issued for one year but can be renewed by the payment of the renewal fee.
