Permits for activities that affect water have an impact on the State's water resources and the ecosystems that are dependent on them. A permit system enables the regulation of these activities which is administered by the Department for Water.

If you need a permit for the following water affecting activities contact the relevant Natural Resources Management (NRM) Board:
- erect, construct, enlarge a dam
- drain discharge watercourse or lake
- water affecting activity in a watercourse, floodplain or lake.

There are two ways to apply and pay online for a permit to construct a well in South Australia:
- apply online - payment is accepted by MasterCard and Visa.

There is temporary suspension on well construction for domestic purposes within the central Adelaide groundwater area.
This means applications for well construction in this area are subject to certain conditions.
