Retail industry guide to waste management

This guide shows the sorts of things that are done in retail centres that have sound environmental management systems in place.

Waste management

Switch from waste disposal to waste minimisation. Think about recycling not only paper and cardboard, but plastics, fluro tubes, compostable material and introducing recycling in public places and using reusable plates and cutlery in food courts.

Energy conservation

Most energy is used in lighting, cooling and heating. Energy savings can be realised by good housekeeping and regular energy audits will help centres with energy efficiency, and save energy and money.

Water conservation

Better waste management and conservation saves money and energy, reduces pollution of waterways and improves surroundings.
Run-off from large open spaces next to shopping centres can gather enormous amounts of rubbish, pollutants and waste and deposit them in adjacent rivers and creeks, and eventually the coast.

What actions are in place to intercept litter, to filter water before it enters the stormwater system and to direct stormwater to landscaped areas?

Garden design

Creating mulched gardens instead of lawns around centres and using native plants to reduce water use.

Pollution control

This should include air, odour and noise.

Purchasing

When purchasing new equipment, selecting the most energy efficient item and encouraging the use of reusable and refillable products.
