Types of energy contract
There are two types of electricity and gas contract available to customers in South Australia:
- standing contracts
- market contracts.
Standing contract
A standing contract is available to all South Australian customers using less than 160MWh per year. The terms and conditions and prices are set by ESCOSA.
There are two providers in South Australia obliged to offer the standing contract prices.
AGL SA is obliged to offer a standing electricity contract to all existing and new South Australian households.
Origin Energy is obliged to offer a standing gas contract to all existing and new South Australian households.
If you have not actively negotiated or selected a specific contract for energy with a provider you are most likely to be on the standing contract.
Market contract
A market contract is a retail energy contract that varies from the regulated terms and conditions of the standing contract.
They may include benefits through loyalty programs, direct debit arrangements or other terms and conditions as agreed between the retailer and customer.
