Gas safety checklist for catering at outdoor events

When using LPG cylinders for catering for outdoor events, it is important to ensure that the cylinders and other related components are safe and free of faults. It is also important to consider the safety of the location where you use and store gas cylinders.

The checklist on this page is provided to help ensure the safety of the public, yourself and your staff when using gas cylinders at outdoor events.

On site gas safety inspections

Safety auditors from the Office of the Technical Regulator may conduct an on site gas safety inspection without prior notice. Under the Gas Act 1997, serious penalties apply to people who knowingly use unsafe gas installations.

The Technical Regulator reserves the right to demand immediate correction of any unsafe condition.

After completing the checklists

Once you have completed the checklist, keep it for the duration of the event. You may be asked to produce the completed checklist during an on-site safety audit.

If you have an unsafe cylinder, gas appliance or installation, you must use a licensed gas fitter to rectify the fault. You can also get help from the Office of the Technical Regulator regarding LPG safety for your outdoor events.

You must take all necessary action to comply with the safety requirements before the start of the event.

Using a licensed gas fitter

All gas installations and other gas work must be performed by a licensed gas fitter. Gas fitters must be able to produce a valid licence on request and provide you with a gas certificate of compliance after the completion of any gas work.
