Passenger transport services

Drivers and operators of taxis, chauffeured vehicles, small and large passenger vehicles play an important role in our lives. Together they provide more than 10 million trips for people in Adelaide each year.

Before a person can drive a public passenger vehicle they must hold accreditation and be assessed as a fit and proper person.
For information on how to apply for a driver or operator accreditation see taxi driver and operator accreditation

Applicants are required to complete a National Police Check form (PDF 104 KB) on line then print and present to  the Accreditation and Licensing Centre with 1000 point ID and pay the prescribed fee for the check.  The application for driver accreditation and medical and eyesight certificate is part of the process to obtain driver accreditation. Operators of taxis and chauffeured vehicles must also complete a course with an approved training provider.

Vehicles used to provide these services must also be accredited by the one-stop-shop.

Taxis

The one-stop-shop is co-located with the Taxi Council SA. The one-stop-shop provides expert advice regarding driver and operator accreditation, taxi licences and leases. The council approves taxi leases and the transfer of taxi licences.

Taxi drivers applying for driver accreditation must attend a four day course with an approved registered training organisation before lodging their application.

Access taxis

Access taxis provide a service to people with disabilities and make a significant contribution to our community.

Access taxi licences have special conditions that require the operator to give a priority service to people with mobility difficulties. To drive an Access taxi, you will need to have taxi driver accreditation and then complete an additional course with Adelaide Access, the provider for access taxis.

Access Taxi licences are available on the open market or through Government tender when new licences are released. To obtain a licence buyers need to purchase one on the open market or wait for licences to be offered by tender.

Operators must ensure their vehicles comply with these standards.

There are 84 access taxis operated by Adelaide Access Taxis.

Country taxi and non-metropolitan hire cars

Country taxi and non-metropolitan (NV) hire cars are available in many regional communities. Contact details for these services are available on the Bus SA website.

To operate a passenger service you must hold operator accreditation and to drive a vehicle you must hold driver accreditation. All vehicles must be approved through the one-stop-shop

Chauffeured vehicles, metropolitan vehicles and traditional vehicles

Small passenger vehicles are also an integral part of the passenger transport system. Passenger vehicles with up to 12 seats (driver plus 11 passengers) are small passenger vehicles. They include what are often referred to as hire cars or chauffeured vehicles (stretch limousines).

The Chauffeured Vehicle Association of South Australia is an incorporated body representing the South Australian small passenger vehicle industry.
