Becoming a taxi driver

How to apply for taxi driver accreditation

Step 1 - information session

Book your information session in person with one of the training providers or one of the central booking services listed on this page.

You must have held an unrestricted Australian driver's licence for a minimum of six months before applying for taxi driver accreditation. You will need to take this licence with you and show it in order to make the booking. You will be provided with a number of forms to complete including driver accreditation and medical and eyesight.

Step 2 - application form

Complete the driver accreditation form and have your signature witnessed by a Justice of the Peace.

Step 3 - National Criminal History Check

Complete the National Criminal History Check online (PDF 104KB), print it out and submit the form along with the fee and 100 point ID to Service SA or the Accreditation and Licensing Centre.

You will receive a letter in the mail stating the National Police Check (NPC) has been progressed.

Step 4 - medical and eyesight certificate

Complete section 1 of the application for a medical and eyesight certificate.

Step 5 - medical examination

Arrange a medical examination and have your doctor complete section 2 of the application for medical and eyesight certificate. Doctor's and other associated fees may apply.

Step 6 - lodge medical forms

Take the completed forms and associated fees to a Service SA customer service centre if you are in a country regions or to the accreditation and licensing centre in the Adelaide metropolitan area.

Step 7 - knowledge of Adelaide assessment

Complete the knowledge of Adelaide assessment which is conducted at the Taxi Council SA Inc. You will need to purchase the Knowledge of Adelaide Kit from the Taxi Council.

Step 8 - English assessment

Book and pay for the English assessment at the Taxi Cab Training Centre or the Transport Industry Training College. Attend the Taxi Council SA, Building 17a, 71 Transport Avenue, Netley (phone 8293 6000).

Undertake the English assessment to test your basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Once you have successfully completed the English assessment you must then complete the prime locations in Adelaide test and the Road Law Theory Test. Your photograph will be taken and you will be issued with a taxi driver training passport.

Step 9 - driving assessment

Complete a driving assessment. Book and pay in person at the training centre where you intend to complete your driving assessment.

Attend the assessment which will take around 30 minutes. This tests your basic driving skills and ability to provide a professional, safe and comfortable journey for passengers. Applicants who fail the test can be reassessed after seven full working days (additional fees will apply).

Step 10 - training course

Attend a four-day training course. Book and pay for the training course in person at one of the approved training providers listed above. When you pass the course your taxi driver training passport will be endorsed. Applicants who fail the course can re-attend (additional fees will apply).

Step 11 - trainee accreditation

Apply for trainee taxi driver accreditation. Go to the Accreditation and Licensing Centre, located at Building 17a, 71 Transport Avenue, Netley. Take your:

completed application for Driver Accreditation and medical and eyesight certificate
taxi driver training passport (pages 4-10 must be completed)
unrestricted South Australian licence
payment.

If your application is approved it will be returned with an approval letter and you will be able to pay a fee for your 12-month trainee taxi driver accreditation. If you have offences or medical conditions listed this will delay processing of your application. It may be necessary for you to appear before the Passenger Transport Standards Committee to present your case (you will be advised by letter with further instructions if this occurs).

National Criminal History Check or Medical certificates over three months old will not be accepted.

Step 12 - on-road training

The Taxi Council will allocate a taxi operator where you can complete your on-road training, as detailed in your taxi driver trainee passport. Take your trainee taxi accreditation and taxi driver training passport to where you completed your introductory session in Step 1. You will be issued with a Personal Identification Number by the Centralised Booking Service and required to complete 240 hours of driving with a taxi operator nominated by the Taxi Council.

Within six months you are also required to undertake professional development modules: module one with the Centralised Booking Service and module 2 with the Taxi Council.

Step 13 - final assessment

Complete your final assessment. Once you have completed your on-road training, make a final assessment booking at the training centre where you completed your training course in Step 5 and take your taxi driver training passport. Undertake the final assessment.

Once you have passed your final assessment your trainee taxi driver training passport (pages 12-18) will be completed.
