The Southern Expressway is a reversible expressway from Main South Road to Noarlunga. Traffic travels in only one direction at a time, with changeover occurring twice a day.

If your vehicle breaks down on the Southern Expressway - contact the Traffic Management Centre using a roadside emergency phone, (located every 500m) and then remain with your vehicle until help arrives.
In an emergency situation, such as an accident or breakdown, you can use your mobile phone to contact the Traffic Management Centre directly on telephone 1800 018 313.
If a vehicle is abandoned on the expressway, and the scheduled changeover time is approaching, the vehicle will be towed to a Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure depot for collection.
What happens if a vehicle is left on the Southern Expressway and gets towed away?
If you leave your car on the expressway and return to find it has been removed, please use a roadside emergency phone to call for further information, or telephone the Traffic Management Centre on 1800 018 313.

The Southern Expressway has:

- three lanes, with an emergency-stopping lane on each side
- roadside emergency phones every 500m
- no intersections with traffic signals (non-stop journey).
State of the art traffic monitoring equipment allows:
- the Traffic Management Centre operators to view the road to ensure that the roadway is completely clear prior to reversing the direction of traffic flow
- motorists to understand clearly the direction and condition of the expressway.
