Intelligent Access Program

The IAP is a national program which uses GPS technology to remotely monitor where, when and how heavy vehicles are operated on South Australia roads.

In South Australia, the IAP is voluntary and provides heavy vehicle operators with access or improved road access in negotiation with the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure.

What are the benefits?

The transport operator will benefit by obtaining improved access arrangements that could in turn lead to improved freight productivity opportunities.

The community benefits through greater assurances that the right trucks operate on the right roads at the right times, offering improved road safety and reducing the impact on infrastructure as a result of non-compliance with access conditions set by Australian road authorities.

Who can enrol?

You may be eligible to enrol if you are operating the following heavy vehicle combinations:

  • single articulated
  • rigid trucks fitted with a tandem drive axle group and without a trailer
  • B-doubles
  • road trains
  • converter dollies.

How to enrol

Step 1: The enrolment process is free. Enrol online or complete the higher mass limits enrolment/amendment or cancellation application form  (PDF 95KB) and lodge via the below contact details. You will need the details from your vehicle certificate of registration.

Step 2:  If assessed as eligible an interim Intelligent Access Condition (IAC) will be issued and is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. The Interim IAC provides you with the information required to engage an IAP service provider.

Step 3:  Select an IAP service provider to have the certified equipment installed. A list of certified IAP service providers can be found at www.tca.gov.au

Step 4:  The IAP service provider will notify the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure when the equipment has been installed. The department will then issue a full Intelligent Access Condition to you and your service provider.

Monitoring will begin from the date on your full IAC.

Equipment break-down or tampering

If your IAP equipment malfunctions or if you suspect it has been tampered with, you must report it immediately.

To make a report complete the malfunction/tamper record (PDF 61KB) and lodge via the below contact details.
