Fines enforcement restrictions

Legislation provides ways for the courts to recover outstanding debts.

If you have unpaid fines, regardless of whether the offence is traffic related or not, the court may order the Registrar of Motor Vehicles not to transact any business with you and order that your driver’s licence be suspended.

Restrictions on your driver’s licence or vehicle registration

If the court orders a licence suspension, it commences 21 days from when the Registrar of Motor Vehicles receives the order from the court. The court will print and post a notice to you. The licence remains suspended for sixty days, during which time you may not drive until the fine is paid or cleared by the court.

If the court orders restricted transactions, you will be unable to conduct vehicle registration and/or licence transactions until the penalty is either paid or cleared by the court.

Paying or clearing the penalty

To pay a penalty or to discuss options to clear the penalty you can:

  • apply to the Fines Payment Unit, PO Box 6589, Adelaide 5000
  • telephone 1800 659 538
  • pay the total amount recorded against you at your local court or any Service SA customer service centre.
