Experience exemptions for driver's licences

In special circumstances you may be exempt from gaining the minimum driving experience requirements for a specific class of driver’s licence.

Class HC

Applicants for a class HC licence who do not meet the minimum driving experience requirements (i.e have not held a class MR or HR for at least one year) may undertake an approved training in lieu of experience (T.I.L.E) course, provided they have held a class C driver’s licence for at least two years.

Restricted licences and other exemptions

Restricted licences may also be issued to cover the use of certain vehicles such as mobile machinery, plant and equipment which is only used within the confines of a factory, depot or industrial complex and has an unladen mass or GVM that exceeds the class of licence held by the person (provided the person has been appropriately trained in the operation of the vehicle).

Applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Applications can be made by writing to:

Co-ordinator, Licence Review
Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure
PO Box 407
Oaklands Park SA 5046
Fax (08) 8374 5140

Exemptions are not available for class MC.

For further information, telephone 13 10 84 or go to a Service SA customer service centre.
