The boat licence theory test confirms that you know the rules and safety requirements of
operating a motorboat. It is a compulsory test you'll need to do before
applying for a boat licence or permit.
What is involved in passing the theory test?
You'll need to complete a written test on boating rules and safety. The test has 50 multiple-choice questions, divided into three parts:
- eight compulsory questions on navigation
- 22 general questions on boating rules
- 20 general questions on boating safety.
To pass the test you'll need to correctly answer all eight compulsory questions and at least 32 of the remaining questions. All questions are based on information that can be found in the South Australian Recreational Boating Safety Handbook.
How to prepare for the test
You'll need to be familiar with boating rules and regulations that are outlined in the
South Australian Recreational Boating Safety Handbook. The handbook is available online, or you can pick up a free copy at any Service SA
customer service centre.
