You must hold the appropriate motor driving instructor’s licence before you can train any driver for a fee or reward.
If you already hold an interstate driving instructor's licence and wish to operate in South Australia you may apply for mutual recognition status.
How to apply for a motor driving instructor's licence
Step 1: Undertake a literacy test.
To book a literacy test telephone (08) 8374 5100.
On the day of the test:
You will receive the result by post.
When you pass the test you can apply for a motor driving instructor's licence.
Step 2: Apply for a motor driving instructor's licence.
Complete the motor driving instructor’s licence application and lodge it together with a copy of your literacy test pass at a Service SA
customer service centre.
You will be sent a letter advising whether your application has been successful.
Step 3: Complete the accredited training course. Contact a
registered training organisation to enrol in the Certificate IV in Transport Logistics, Road Transport – Driver Instruction course.
You will need to provide the training organisation with a copy of your literacy test and successful application.
Step 4: Obtain your motor driving instructor's licence. Take a copy of your accredited training course qualification to a Service SA
customer service centre.
You will be issued with a Motor Driving Instructor's Licence (as long as you have not accumulated any convictions and still have an unconditional driver's licence).
You cannot begin training clients until you receive your Motor Driving Instructor's Licence. Please allow up to 14 days.
Further training for accredited instructors and examiners
Once you are an experienced motor driving instructor you can undertake further training towards becoming an
accredited instructor or an examiner.
