Accredited driving examiners can issue a certificate of competency to a learner driver so that they can obtain a provisional licence.

How to apply to be a driving examiner
Step 1: Prepare details of your suitability to be a driving examiner
Prepare the following details:
- a copy of your Certificate IV in Transport Logistics, Road Transport - Driver Instruction (TLI41207)
- the names of five novice drivers trained by you who have gained their provisional licence (under the vehicle-on-road test method).
Step 2: Complete an assessment of suitability
Book a road law theory assessment and demonstration drive - phone 8374 5100.
Attend Driver Training and Audit at the appointed time and provide the information detailing your suitability to be a driving examiner from Step 1.
Pass the assessment and demonstration drive using a manual geared vehicle (supplied).
When you have successfully completed the assessment you will be issued with a letter acknowledging you are a suitable candidate to apply for the two additional assessment units.
Step 3: Complete additional assessment courses
Contact a registered training organisation and enrol in the following courses:
- Plan and organise assessment
- Assess competence.
You will need to present your letter of suitability when enrolling.
Step 4: Complete a final accreditation course.
Book into the next Car Accredited Course by phoning 8374 5100.
Attend Driver Training and Audit to do the course.
Note that the course duration is six days and applicants must meet the required documented standard to achieve competency and gain endorsement as a driving examiner.
Interstate applicants
Holders of a driving instructor's licence from another state may apply for mutual recognition status. For an application form contact Driver Training and Audit.

Interstate providers
The department will only recognise TLI41207 Certificates issued by interstate Approved Training Organisations (RTOs) which have current Service Provider Deeds with the driver licensing regulator in the jurisdiction.
