Conditional vehicle registration

Conditional registration allows certain vehicle types to be registered for use on the road network.

The different types of conditional registration are described below.

Special purpose vehicle - a vehicle that is not built for carrying loads or passengers and the primary purpose on the road network is not transporting loads or passengers.

Restricted primary producer's vehicle - a vehicle owned by a primary producer that is used between farm blocks - ie  in working nominated parcels of land in conjunction with one another.

Restricted miscellaneous vehicle - a vehicle restricted to a specified area by conditions or in accordance with a notice issued by the registrar.

Emergency response vehicle - a vehicle defined as an ambulance, fire fighting vehicle or rescue vehicle.

Historic vehicle
- a motor vehicle where 30 years or more have elapsed since 1 January of the year in which the vehicle was manufactured. Use is restricted to no more than 90 days in each 12 month registration period.

Left hand drive vehicle - a vehicle manufactured before 1 January 1974. Its use will be restricted to no more than 90 days in each 12 month registration period, with each journey recorded in a log book.

Gazettes, codes of practice and operating conditions

Some operating conditions applied to a vehicle are outlined in gazette notices and codes of practice. Vehicles can also be allocated a conditional registration code.
