Motorists can choose between the general issue number plate or buy a special number plate for their vehicle.

General issue number plates
Cars and light vehicles
The general issue number plate for cars, light vehicles and trailers contains seven characters beginning with S followed by three numbers and three letters. The slogan 'South Australia' is on the bottom of the plate.

If you've a bicycle rack attached to the back of your car, you'll need a bike rack number plate. Bike rack number plates must bear the same number as that which is allotted to the vehicle to which the rack is mounted.
Heavy vehicles
The general issue number plate for heavy vehicles contains six characters beginning with S followed one letter, two numbers and two letters. The slogan 'SA Heavy Vehicle' is on the bottom of the plate.

Motorcycles
The general issue number plate for motorcycles contains six characters beginning with S followed by two numbers and three letters. The letters 'SA' are at the top centre of the plate.

Displaying number plates
Only number plates issued by the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure and made by the approved manufacturer comply with the requirements of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The display of non-approved plates incurs the risk of a traffic infringement notice and a fine.
Number plates must be visible from the front and rear of a motor vehicle and must not be obscured by a tow ball, load, plastic cover, dirt build-up or any part of the vehicle’s bodywork.
Surrendering a number plate
Number plates can be surrendered at any Service SA customer service centre.
