You'll need to study the road rules and pass a theory test before you can apply for a learner's permit.
Learning the road rules
You need to be able to demonstrate that you know all about the road rules and road safety to pass the theory test.
You can study the road rules by reading the driver's handbook. This guide explains the road rules, road safety information and contains sample questions from the theory test.
Read the driver's handbook and practice the theory test online by visiting the My Licence website.
Doing the theory test
You can undertake the test at:
- a Service SA customer service centre between 9.00 am and 4:15 pm, Monday to Friday (except public holidays). Bookings for licence theory, hazard perception and boating theory tests are required.
- most remote country police stations
- you can also sit the theory test at Adelaide Service SA on Saturdays between 9.00am and 2.00pm by appointment only. To book a time call Service SA on 13 10 84 Monday to Friday 8.00am to 6.00pm.* Please note interpreter bookings are not available on Saturday

The test is provided on a computer screen or as a written test and it may take 30 minutes or more to complete.
If you fail it is recommended that you study in more detail before trying again. You will be required to pay a fee each time you attempt the test.
