If you have a learner's permit, you need to have a qualified supervising driver or
motor driving instructor seated next to you when driving.
The importance of a qualified supervising driver
Choosing qualified supervising driver is very important. He or she will supervise and instruct you when driving, and teach you how to operate a motor vehicle safely and efficiently.
Your qualified supervising driver will need to meet the legal requirements below and record his or her name, licence number and signature in your
learner driver logbook.
Your qualified supervising driver could be asked to confirm that he or she supervised your driving experience.
Who can be your qualified supervising driver?
You parents, relatives or friends or anyone else can be your qualified supervising driver as long as they meet the legal requirements below:
- must have a current full licence applicable to the class of vehicle being driven that has been held for the preceding two years (not a learner's permit, provisional or probationary licence)
- must not have been disqualified from driving in the past two years.
- must not have a licence that is subject to good behaviour conditions
- must be seated immediately alongside you at all times while you are driving.
A current full licence can be a foreign licence from a
recognised country. If the driver holds a foreign licence that is not from one of the recognised countries the driver may not be a qualified supervising driver.
It is and offence for your qualified supervising driver to have a concentration of alcohol of 0.05 grams or more in their blood, or a presence of THC (cannabis), methylamphetamine (speed) or MDMA (ecstasy) in their blood or oral fluid (saliva).
Heavy vehicles
If you are
learning to drive a heavy vehicle your qualified supervising driver must meet the conditions above and comply with the fatigue laws as if they are driving.
