Annual heavy vehicle inspections

Vehicles that meet any of the following criteria need an annual roadworthy inspection before they can be registered:

  • a vehicle that has a gross vehicle mass of more than 4.5 tonnes or, in the case of a trailer, a gross towing mass of more than 4.5 tonnes
  • a vehicle which is part of a road train or B-double, or a combination, including its load (if any), that is over 19 metres long or has a total mass over 42.5 tonnes.

A roadworthy inspection is also required if the vehicle:

  • has been issued with a defect notice
  • has a changed seating capacity
  • is new and is not fitted with a compliance plate
  • is a repaired, written-off vehicle
  • has had modifications made to the brakes, steering or suspension systems
  • was registered in another state, is more than seven years old and has an unladen mass of 4.5 tonnes or more (including trailers)
  • is a bus used for hire, fare or reward
  • is used in country regions, has 12 or fewer seats and is used to carry passengers for hire, fare or reward (except self drive)
  • is a road train or B-double or combination over 19 metres and/or 42.5 tonnes
  • is a semi trailer or a converter dolly
  • is from interstate and is to be registered in SA for the first time.

vehicle inspection fee is payable.

Restricted access vehicles must be maintained to comply with specifications as set out in the Road Traffic Act 1961.

Heavy vehicles which operate under the national heavy vehicle accreditation scheme (NHVAS) maintenance module are exempt from undergoing an annual roadworthy inspection.
