Fitness to drive a heavy vehicle

Road train and B-triple drivers must be certified as being fit to drive a heavy vehicle. This must be done by a medical practitioner in accordance with assessing fitness to drive 2003 (published by Austroads).

Road train and B-triple drivers must carry a valid medical certificate (PDF 61KB) or copy with them when driving a NHVAS accredited road train or B-triple on routes between Port Augusta West and Northern Adelaide.

The driver must be able to produce the medical certificate or copy to an authorised officer on request.

Drivers must have a medical examination conducted, as a minimum, once every three years for drivers aged 49 or under, and yearly for drivers aged 50 and over.

Drivers of particular combinations such as B-doubles and road trains may require more frequent medicals.
