In order to become an operator of a vessel you will need to study the South Australian boat safety laws and pass a written exam.
You can study the boat rules and safety requirements by reading the Recreational Boating Safety Handbook.
This handbook explains boating rules, regulations, safety equipment requirements and boat safety information and contains sample questions from the theory test.
Practise the online test
The boat licence theory test confirms that you know the rules and safety requirements of operating a motorboat.
It is a compulsory test you'll need to do (unless you are exempt due to holding an appropriate qualification or current interstate boat licence) before applying for a boat licence or permit.
Read the Recreational Boating Safety Handbook and practise the boat licence test online.
Doing the theory test
You can undertake the test at a Service SA customer service centre between 9.00 am and 4:15 pm, Monday to Friday (except public holidays). You do not need to pre-book the test.
The exam consists of a series of multiple choice questions, which are all based on information in the Recreational Boating Safety Handbook.
If you fail it is recommended that you study in more detail before trying again. You will be required to pay a fee each time you attempt the test.
