For people with serious or life-threatening illnesses, organ or tissue transplantation could mean a second chance at life.
Who can donate
There is no age limit on the donation of some organs and tissue. Your age and medical history will be considered but you shouldn't assume you are not eligible to donate due to your age or state of health.
Registering to donate organs or tissue
Registering to donate on the Australian Organ Donor Register shows a clear decision about your wishes. Visit the Frequently asked questions section to find out about organ and tissue donations and how to register.
You need to register even if your driver’s licence says you intend to be an organ donor.
It is also important that you talk with your family about your decision so that they know your intentions. In the event of your death, the Australian Organ Donor Register will contact your family.
The Register is administered by the Health Insurance Commission on behalf of the Australian Government.
Support services
GriefLink is a resource on death-related grief for the community and professionals. It provides information and advice about different reactions that families might have to organ donation.
