Metropolitan Equipment Scheme

The Metropolitan Equipment Scheme (MES) provides access for older people to a range of basic equipment, such as shower chairs and walking frames, and more specialised items such as powered wheelchairs.

Assistance with home modifications, such as installation of hand rails and steps or, in some circumstances, more complex modifications such as the removal of a bath is also available within the scheme.

Eligibility for the scheme

MES is targeted at people 65 years of age and over living in metropolitan Adelaide with a long-term need for equipment or home modifications.

Younger people with a disability may be eligible in some circumstances.

Additional eligibility criteria will apply for specialised equipment items such as a powered wheelchair or major home modifications.  Priority will be given to those who are vulnerable or who have special needs. When eligibility and priority have been determined, a waiting time may apply.

Some of the items that can be provided include:

  • walking aids
  • bathroom and shower aids
  • hoists and transfer aids
  • manual wheelchairs
  • powered wheelchairs
  • electric beds
  • wigs
  • medical footwear
  • grab rails
  • banister rails
  • ramps
  • threshold ramps
  • bathroom and kitchen modifications.

All equipment and home modifications will be assessed by qualified staff prior to issue.

If you don't live in metropolitan Adelaide and need equipment, contact your local community health service or phone Healthlink on 1800 003 307.
