What is a personal alert system?

A personal alert system is a device that enables people to call for help in an emergency if they are unable to access or use a telephone.

Personal alert systems generally are a lightweight pendant worn on the wrist or around the neck that can be activated to alert someone in an emergency, such as:

  • neighbours
  • relatives
  • friends
  • a monitoring centre.

By pressing a button on the pendant, a signal or message is sent and a pre-agreed response put into action.

Help with choosing a system

There are two ways to get help with choosing a system:

1. Seniors Information Service

The Seniors Information Service (SIS) has information about personal alert systems which includes a list of providers in South Australia.

Visit SIS at 76 Waymouth Street, Adelaide or phone them on 8168 8776 or 1800 636 367 (SA country freecall).

2. Independent Living Centre

The Independent Living Centre (ILC) provides information and advice on equipment to help individuals improve their quality of life and maintain their independence. This service is free of charge and available for all members of the public.

ILC has an extensive range of monitored systems and autodiallers for the public to browse and trial. Health professionals can advise on the most appropriate system to suit your needs, as well as provide detailed product information and supplier details.

ILC’s equipment catalogue has additional information on personal alert systems.

Visit the Independent Living Centre South Australia at 11 Blacks Road Gilles Plains or phone them on 8266 5260 or 1300 885 886 (SA / NT callers only).
