Purpose of the guide

The practitioners guide is an online technical guide to help planning practitioners prepare development plan amendments (DPAs).

People who are not planning practitioners can get an understanding of development plans from Development plans and their use and view the Guide to development plans and development plan amendments (PDF 717KB). This guide uses non-technical language to explain the purpose of a development plan, the processes involved in a DPA, and how members of the public can comment on a proposed DPA.

Use of the guide

The practitioners guide assists planners working within the South Australian planning system to:
  • prepare DPA documents
  • conduct a DPA process
  • submit DPA documentation at key stages for approval.

The guide details the seven key stages of a DPA, from inception through to approval by the Minister responsible for planning and the Development Act 1993. It includes templates for the documents required by the minister and the state government planning agency, as well as a range of supporting documents and useful references.
