In September 2011 the Minister for Planning proposed new legislation, in the form of two Bills, to protect the special character of the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. At the same time the minister also proposed a development plan amendment to prevent inappropriate development in the two districts. Following consultation with councils and the community in late 2011, the Minister revised both the draft legislation and the development plan amendment in response to the feedback.The revised Bills are:
