The proposal

The development proposal for a desalination plant by SA Water will be situated at Port Stanvac.

The project has a capital value of approximately $1.37 billion and comprises:

  • a desalination plant located at Port Stanvac with a rated capacity of 300 ML a day (100 GL per annum) based upon reverse osmosis technology
  • intake and outlet pipelines to draw raw seawater into the facility and discharge concentrate to the Gulf of St Vincent
  • electricity supplied from the grid, but sourced from renewable energy sources.

Port Stanvac was identified by the state’s desalination working group as the preferred site as part of a major investment in water infrastructure to secure South Australia’s water supply.
