How to enrol

Government primary school students

Year 7 students at government schools receive an enrolment package at the end of their first term. The application form for enrolment in year 8 must be completed and returned to the student's current primary school by the due date indicated in the package.

If the address shown on the enrolment application form is incorrect, you will need to provide proof of residence

Non-government primary school students

Year 7 students from non-government schools applying for a place in a government high school can pick up an enrolment pack from their nearest public school or regional office.

The application form for enrolment in year 8 must be completed and returned with supporting documentation, including proof of residence, to the state coordinator for year 8 enrolment by the due date indicated in the enrolment package.

Proof of residence

It is important that student residency details are correct and up to date.
These items are accepted as proof of residence:

  • a gas or electricity bill in the name of the parent or carer that shows a home address (not a business address) - phone bills and water rate bills are not accepted
  • a copy of the contract of sale for the property (if the home is the permanent residence), or a rental agreement and a bond receipt from the Residential Tenancies Tribunal showing the current place of residence – the rental agreement should cover at least the first 12 months at the school
  • if the student is living with a friend or a relative, evidence is required to show that the friend or relative is the student's legal guardian – this must include a Parenting Order from the family court showing that the relative or friend is the student's full-time carer.

Out-of-zone applications

When completing the application form, either choose your zoned school (shown on the form) or choose three other schools in order of preference.

Every high school has to reserve enough places for students who live within its designated zone. Depending on the number of places available, some schools may accept students who live outside the zone.

When applying to a school that is not your zoned school, it is important to explain your reasons for your choice on a separate sheet of paper attached to your application form.

Your preferences will be considered on the basis of:

  • distance from your home to the school
  • curriculum that cannot be offered at your zoned school
  • social and family links
  • transport consideration and convenience of school location
  • disability and medical reasons.

Overseas and non-permanent residents

Students who are not permanent residents of Australia are allowed to enrol in South Australian government schools, subject to conditions which are determined by their visa sub-class.

The type of visa-sub class also determines whether a child will be required to pay full fees or whether they are eligible to be recognised as a local student and pay local fees only.

Enrolling in schools offering specialised courses and programs

A number of high schools offer specialised courses and programs. Some of these schools have an additional selection process for entry into their special programs - you will still need to complete an application form for your child at their zoned school in case applications for other schools are not successful.

Students applying for enrolment at schools offering specialised courses:

  • can include the schools as out-of-zone schools on their application in order of preference
  • may be accepted at an out-of-zone school but not accepted in the specialised courses or programs offered at the school
  • may be successful in more than one enrolment application - these students will be contacted by their regional office and asked to select one of the schools.

Unsuccessful applications

Students who do not gain a place at their preferred school still have a guaranteed place at their zoned high school. They will receive an acceptance pack from their zoned high school including:

  • a letter of welcome
  • notice of year 8 enrolment
  • a year 8 enrolment appeal form.

Appeals

The student acceptance pack includes information about the enrolment appeal process and timelines for lodging an appeal. You can only lodge an appeal if there is additional information that was not provided in the original application but which should be considered.

This process does not apply to special interest schools. Special interest schools that have an appeal process will inform applicants of the process when they are notified of the outcome of their application.

The Enter for Success Program for Aboriginal students

Year 7 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students may enrol and be accepted into any government high school of their choice in South Australia through the Enter for Success Program.

This program supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in high school and aims to improve attendance and retention rates. Parents are encouraged to talk to the staff at their child's primary school about the option of attending a secondary school other than their zoned school.

The school can also help you fill out the registration of interest form
