Students who are unable to attend a local school or access curriculum at their school may be able to undertake school externally. This is sometimes called distance education. External education may include:

- specialised course booklets
- DVDs, CDs and activity kits
- face-to-face workshops
- camps and excursions
- visits from teachers.
Students should have access to a computer and internet to take advantage of all delivery modes.
External education for reception to year 12 and adult re-entry can be suitable for students who are:
- South Australian residents who will be travelling for one term or longer
- living further than 3-5km from their nearest school
- carers, young mothers or have other family commitments
- wanting to undertake subjects or vocational education not available at their school
- 16 years or over and have left school
- year 10 home schooled students preparing for SACE
- doing SACE, nationally accredited vocational education or a training certificate.
