Schools, universities and other educational institutions offer scholarships based on various criteria. These may be merit-based or related to the cultural or social background of student's.
External institutions and benefactors also fund scholarships for various reasons, including needs-based or career specific.
Scholarships in government schools
Some government schools offer scholarships or awards that are usually sponsored by an organisation to help cover the cost of specific educational activities. In most cases it is for students already attending the school. Talk to the principal to find out more.

Scholarships for Aboriginal students
Aboriginal students studying SACE in years 11 and 12 can apply for a Dame Roma Mitchell Scholarship. Each scholarship winner receives $2000.
Applicants must outline their career aspirations and community involvement and the school has to provide information about the student's capacity to complete SACE.

application form.
Financial support is also offered to Aboriginal students through the
Commonwealth Scholarships Program.

Assistance for people with special needs
Students from low socio-economic backgrounds, particularly those from rural and regional areas and Aboriginal students, can seek assistance with higher education costs under the
Commonwealth Scholarships Program.

International students
International students studying or planning to study in Australia on a student visa can
apply for a scholarship offered by Australian-based organisations, institutions and government bodies.
Postgraduate students may be eligible for an
Australian Leadership Award Scholarship. These are long term awards for study at an Australian higher education institution and are aimed at building partnerships with developing countries while addressing priority development areas.

Other forms of assistance
School Card – full-time students from low income families who are attending government and non-government schools can claim assistance for a range of school expenses, including fees.
Help with educational costs – students and their families can get help with education costs through a variety of schemes provided by Centrelink and other national agencies.
Travel concession and allowances – eligible students can apply for a travelling allowance and boarding assistance.
Grants – school communities can apply for a grant to fund new initiatives that encourage increased involvement of parents and caregivers.
