Preschool staff make observations about what children know, what they can do and what they understand. This information is then analysed and reported to parents in various ways.

In preschool children are assessed to:
- find out how they are progressing
- identify the need for extra support
- help educators plan for the child's further learning and development
- provide feedback to educators on the effectiveness of the learning opportunities, environments and experiences offered
- inform parents about progress.
Parents can contribute to the assessment process by sharing their observations about learning that occurs in the home.
Progress Reports
Parents receive feedback on their child's progress through:
- regular consultation and informal discussion with their preschool's staff
- a one-off written report that describes the child's learning and development during their time at preschool.
The written report is based on the
Early Years Learning Framework. It is usually presented to the family at a meeting arranged by the preschool as part of the child's transition to school. With parental permission, a copy of the report is given to the school.
