Volunteers generally give their time to help others or because they're committed to a cause and come back because it's enjoyable and fun.
Looking after volunteers and providing them with support demonstrates how much they are valued and increases the likelihood that they will continue their volunteer work. The way you treat your volunteers should be no different to the way you treat paid staff. The key to retention is to develop a sense of commitment among volunteers.
Several ways that organisations can
demonstrate appreciation of the value of volunteers through rewards, recognition and respect is recommended by the Australian Institute of Community Practice and Governance.
A
recognising your volunteers (PDF 3.1MB) fact sheet is also available from the Office for Volunteers, which highlights some practical activities organisations can undertake to recognise their volunteers.
Another important area to consider is identifying any issues that may discourage people from volunteering in your organisation. Misunderstandings and disputes can highlight the need for effective strategies to resolve problems. For more information see
resolving disputes.
