Community support

Volunteering is for everyone

Everyone has the right to actively participate in and contribute to their community.

Generally anyone can do volunteer work, but some organisations may have age restrictions depending on the type of role - for example where the person is required to use machinery or work at heights. The law also has age restrictions in some cases - eg for activities such as handling alcohol.

Young people

Young people who volunteer have a lot to contribute and gain in terms of skills and experience. They can also benefit from volunteer work through personal development, building confidence and communication skills, meeting new people and facing challenges.

Secondary and tertiary students may have opportunities to volunteer through their school, TAFE or university. Contact the relevant organisation to see what opportunities are available. Students can increase their chances of finding paid work by volunteering during school holidays or after completing their final year of study.

Retirees and seniors

Retiree and senior volunteers make significant contributions in a diverse range of areas including with community or welfare organisations. They often have life experiences that add value when shared with others.

People from diverse cultural backgrounds

There are many opportunities for people from different cultural backgrounds to volunteer in a wide range of roles with organisations across metropolitan and regional South Australia.

Through volunteering, new migrants, refugees or overseas students studying in Australia can:

  • connect with the local community
  • share their skills and culture
  • learn more about the Australian way of life
  • gain experience as a pathway to employment.

People with disabilities

There are many people with a disability volunteering in our communities. As well as making an important contribution, volunteers can benefit from:

  • making new friends
  • learning new skills
  • growing in confidence.

Aboriginal people

Aboriginal people continue to make an important contribution to the Australian community through formal and informal volunteering.
From young people through to Elders, Aboriginal volunteers are managing community groups, sitting on advisory committees, contributing to sport, art and cultural activities and supporting families.

Volunteering opportunities are available with Aboriginal organisations or in the wider Australian community. Volunteering enables you to:

  • make new friends
  • share your culture
  • gain new skills
  • build on your resume
  • gain experience as a pathway to employment.

Volunteering SA & NT’s Aboriginal Reference Group can support individuals and communities that are interested in taking up volunteering.
