Support during pregnancy

Your doctor (general practitioner or GP) can provide you with information and support during your pregnancy. Your doctor will also be able to refer you to a specialist if needed.

Information about the types of care during pregnancy and birth can be found on the Children, Youth and Women's Health website.

Support services in your local area can be accessed through Disability Services. For more information, phone 1300 786 117 or contact your local Disability Services office. If you are not a Disability Services client see eligibility and referrals.

For phone information, counselling and support, call the Parent Helpline on 1300 364 100 (cost of a local call). The line is open 24-hours-a-day, every day of the year.

Support after you have your baby

If you have just had a baby, your hospital or doctor may have already put you in contact with a local parenting support program or parenting group. Many areas also offer programs and support for new fathers with a disability. Information on parenting groups can be found on the Children, Youth and Women's Health website.

If you, or your partner, are having trouble accessing a parenting support program, get advice about what's available in your area:

For information, counselling and support phone the Parent Helpline on 1300 364 100 (cost of a local call). The line is open 24-hours-a-day, every day of the year.

Home visits and support to eligible families over a two-year period is provided by the Child and Youth Health Family home visiting program.

Stories and information about pregnancy, birth and parenting written by, for and about young parents can be found in the guide of sanity and survival for young parents on the Child and Youth Health website.
