The Aboriginal Inclusion Team is part of the Inclusion Unit in Disability, Ageing and Carers (DAC).
An important part of the team's work is to:
- support the consumer driven consultation process lead by the Aboriginal Disability Advisory Network of SA to identify barriers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities face where disability support is needed
- provide advice on strategic policy review and development whilst monitoring and evaluating the impact of existing/new policy initiatives for Aboriginal people
- work with other government departments and Department for Families and Communities (DFC) divisions to increase the capacity and confidence of the disability sector to provide culturally competent and respectful services to Aboriginal people
- support improvements to the government-funded contracts with non-government Aboriginal services for people with disability
- provide executive and policy support to the Tri-State Disability Services Group
- identify Aboriginal specific national and state policy initiatives that impact on the disability sector.
Aboriginal Disability Advisory Network of SA
The Aboriginal Disability Advisory Network for South Australia (ADANSA) is a peak group for Aboriginal people with a disability. It is made up of people who are living with disability or who are carers.
The Network is elected at the Gathering People Linking Voices Conference held every three years. The Network members consult with people living in metropolitan, urban and regional settings to discuss the incidence and nature of disability.
ADANSA meets four times a year to talk directly with management of government and non-government agencies and service providers about developing culturally appropriate services that enhance life in communities for Aboriginal people with disability and their families and carers.
