Doing business online using your credit card

Verified by Visa (VBV)

Verified by Visa (VBV) is a Visa initiative providing an additional security measure to protect Visa credit card users when they transact online.

Adding a password to your existing Visa card ensures only you can use your Visa card online. It’s easy to activate for your existing Visa card and it’s free.

The South Australia State Government has implemented Verified by Visa so when you transact online to pay a government bill you may be asked for your Visa card VBV password. Not all financial institutions may have implemented Verified by Visa - check if your financial institution is participating.

If the Verified by Visa function is unavailable at the time of your transaction, the system will allow you to proceed and complete your online payment without VBV being initiated.

Card Verification Value (CVV)

Card Verification Value (CVV) is a new authentication procedure established by credit card companies to reduce fraud for internet transactions.

It requires a card holder to enter the CVV number at transaction time to verify that the card is on hand. The CVV code is a security feature for  transactions where the card is not present eg internet transactions and now appears on most major credit and debit cards.

This new feature is a three-digit code providing a cryptographic check of the information embossed on the card. The CVV code is not part of the card number itself. The CVV Code is the three-digit number appearing on the reverse side of the credit card and is found where the signature appears.
