Licences for offshore petroleum activity within the first three nautical miles offshore South Australia are administered by PIRSA under the Petroleum (Submerged Lands) Act 1982.
Petroleum exploration and activity in Commonwealth waters, seaward of the State three nautical mile sea limit, is administered jointly by PIRSA and the Australian Government under the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006.
Environmental Regulation
Part 12 of the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Act 2000 provides for protection of the environment from potential and adverse impacts related to petroleum activities. This includes the need for licensees to prepare a statement of environmental objectives (SEO), based on an environmental impact report (EIR).
