Overview

South Australian aquaculture is an emerging industry, with significant production already occurring at an increasing number of sites along the coast, particularly Eyre Peninsula and Kangaroo Island.

Species currently propagated include southern bluefin tuna, oysters, abalone, mussels, scallops, snapper, Atlantic salmon, yellowtail kingfish, native finfish, freshwater crayfish and barramundi.

There is considerable potential for these industries to expand, and a range of alternative sites are currently being identified.

The South Australian Government and industry stakeholders ensure ecologically-sustainable development of the industry, providing opportunity for industry investment.

Significant inroads are being made into international and domestic markets. Continued growth is expected, especially because of South Australia's natural advantages as an aquaculture location.

If you want to conduct aquaculture for business, trade or research in South Australia you require an aquaculture licence.

Apply for a licence

For land-based and marine aquaculture licences you must first lodge a written expression of interest (EOI) with PIRSA Aquaculture.

Once your EOI has been assessed you will be notified of the suitability of the venture for full assessment and sent the relevant application forms.

The PIRSA Aquaculture website has:
  • detailed information on the EOI
  • a summary of the approval process for a marine aquaculture licence and lease
  • aquaculture forms.
