Overview
Licensed contractors must ensure their building work is supervised by a registered and approved supervisor.
If you intend operating as a sole trader you need to meet one of these conditions:
- hold a contractor's licence and a supervisor's registration
- hold a contractor's licence and have a supervisor approved for your business.
A company should seek approval for a natural person to be its registered building work supervisor at the same time as it applies for a contractor's licence.
Under the Building Work Contractors Act 1995 the nominated supervisor must be a director of the applicant company or an employee of the applicant contractor.

Apply for registration
If you have never held a licence before, or if you have allowed it to lapse, you need to apply for a new one.
You can apply for a new licence by answering a series of questions verbally, either in person at the office of Consumer and Business Services (CBS) or by phone on 8204 9644. Staff will complete your application form and forward it for you to check and sign.
You will need to lodge with your application the specified fees and supporting documents. CBS will then assess your application to determine if you have met all the necessary criteria.
Before you apply check the CBS website for your entitlement to be registered.
The full process to apply for registration and the application form (PDF 292KB) for approval of a building works supervisor can also be found on the CBS website.
