What is a Domain Name

A domain name uniquely identifies an Internet Protocol (IP) resource such as a website on the internet. Domains are based on the Domain Name System (DNS).

Management of Domain Names

The allocation of domain names is centrally managed to avoid the risk of conflict and duplication.

Within Australia, the Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO) is the approving authority for requests associated with the ‘gov.au’ domain. In South Australia, the Approving Authority (Domain Registrar) for requests associated with the ‘sa.gov.au’ domain is the Office of the Chief Information Officer (CIO).

Timeframes

Please allow up to 5 working days for the processing of:

  • New domain name applications
  • Domain deletions
  • Transfer of administration accounts

For scheduled changes, 5 working days notice is required.

Applying for an External Domain Name

Steps 1 and 2 must be completed before an external domain name can be registered. External, or public, facing domain names require registration via NetRegistry.

A request is not an automatic approval. Approval must be granted by the Office of the CIO.

Step 1

Before lodging a request for an external domain name, an agency must consider:

  • Using the SA Government's common internet site for their web content: www.sa.gov.au.  Contact Service SA.
  • Obtain approval from the Premiers Communications Advisory Group (PCAG) through the Department of the Premier and Cabinet's Strategic Communications Unit for websites launched for marketing purposes.
  • Ensure the domain name complies with the guideline: OCIO/G5.3.1 Applications and Internet, Guidelines for Management of Government Domains – coming soon. Please contact John Kirby, telephone 8226 5135 or email Domain.Names@sa.gov.au
  • Familiarise yourself with the policy:  OCIO/P5.3 Applications and Internet, Government Domains (PDF 116 KB).

Step 2

For all domain name registrations (internal and external), the following information must be provided to the South Australian Domain Register at the Office of the CIO domain.names@sa.gov.au

  • Chief Executive/Chief Information Officer/Chief Technology Officer approval to create the new domain (email approval is sufficient)
  • IP address that the domain will resolve to
  • Internode ClientID for billing purposes (for public facing websites only).

If further information is required, the Office of the CIO will contact agencies.

Step 3

For all external domain names, visit www.domainname.gov.au, click on
'Apply for a new gov.au domain name' and select the jurisdiction SA Government.

If approved, you will receive a system generated email with registration details and a tax invoice or receipt of payment.

Applying for an Internal Domain Name

Domain Names which are not public facing (inside StateNet) do not require registration via NetRegistry. Internal facing domain names are organised on your behalf by the Office of the CIO. Complete Step 2 above.

Renewals

Domain Names are renewed at www.domainname.gov.au

There is a $55.00, non-refundable, fee for a domain name licence. The fee is incurred on approval of an application for a new domain or renewal of an existing domain. The licence period is fixed at 2 years.

To ensure your agency receives renewal update notifications, account details must be maintained so that the correct contact person is listed.  Generic email addresses are recommended in the event that staff move.

Managing your account

To change administrative contact details for an external domain, or to delete a domain, go to www.domainname.gov.au and click on 'Apply to Manage an Existing Domain Name'.
